PCPL Book Club

PCPL Book Club is for anyone who loves to read and talk about what they read! We read a new pick each month and get together to chat about what we read. We typically meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 5pm at the Library!

Each month is a different genre, style, author, etc. to keep us trying new books and expanding our horizons! Hard copies are available at the library and also on Hoopla and/or Libby! Stay current by joining our [PCPL] BOOK CLUB Facebook Group.

We’d love for you to join us!

Sit n’ Stitch

Do you like to knit or crochet? Come on over and join us to work on your current project with friends! More of a social club than a class, but a fun opportunity to make friends, get ideas, and just have some time with fellow yarn enthusiasts! Meet in the board room on the lower level on Wednesdays at 1pm!

Weekly Storytime with Mr. Chad

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Reading to your kiddos is the best way to enhance literacy, promote reading, and encourage parent and child bonding. Ages 0-5 are critical years in child development and parents/caregivers are integral in providing the first source of education. This program is designed to encourage reading each day. 1000 books seems daunting but how often do your children let you stop at just one book? You can read literally any book to your child, multiple times even, and count it toward reading 1000 books before to them before they start kindergarten.

Get started today by downloading the Beanstack app. Once you create an account, you can find the “1000 Books Reading Challenge” and start logging books you read with your kiddo(s)! And yes, duplicate books count and you can even count books read by other family members, daycare providers, etc. Every 100 books earns a badge and at every 250 books completed, stop by the library to pick a prize! Special prizes at other levels as well as upon completion of the program!

Other tracking methods are available if you’d prefer not to use an app! For more information or questions, call the library and speak with Youth Services or email csmith@parkecountypl.lib.in.us

The mission of the Friends of the Parke County Public Library is to promote excellence in library services by working with the Library Board and staff to support the library, its services and programs. To carry out this mission, the Friend’s focus will be on advocacy, fundraising, public relations and volunteer services.

Meetings

The Friends of the Parke County Public Library meet once a month, usually the 4th Wednesday at 3:45pm in the Board Room at the Library.

What are some of the projects the Friends do?

The Friends of the PCPL help the Parke County Public Library in various ways.

We aid in planning and hosting programs. Like helping organize events the Library will host in March and April for the Wabash Valley Big Read. These programs are hosted at PCPL in coordination with Vigo County Public Library and other participating libraries in the Wabash Valley. The program is centered on one book and copies of the book are available free through the grant obtained by the Vigo County Public Library. We will also help fund special guest speakers and other programs such as children’s events. We also volunteer at such events when we can!

We have established a “Books on Buses” program on the buses of our school systems within Parke County to aid in access to reading materials. The books are at the front of the bus in a bag and children can pick one up to read while on the bus. They can return it on the way off the bus or keep it to read at home. We stock and manage the books to keep options available!

The Friends of the Library partner with the PCPL director to go into the schools to get library cards for high school students in Parke County. Many of PCPL’s resources are available without a card, but others require a library card. We also want to encourage the use of the library. So we arrange to spend 10-15 minutes in each English class to talk about digital offerings, the library system, what resources are available to them and more to grow awareness and increase use of the library.
